In Action
Bringing History to Life!

One of the ways I bring the past to life is through costumes. The kids love to see me outside of my usual shirt and tie. And, it is very freeing for me - I can be a bit more crazy!
Active Learning!

Yeah, I guess I could have the students sit at a desk for 80 minutes and simply listen to me lecture on and on about medieval European entertainment....or, I could get the students out of the room and into the past!
Opportunities for Creativity!

One of the formative assessment tools I regularly employ is some sort of creative, hands-on experience. I offer students choice in terms of what they produce (and they make awesome stuff!), but I also focus on the process. Having an authentic showcase opportunity is also important.

Modelling

I never miss an opportunity to show students how I problem-solve and think critically through modelling/think alouds. For instance, I show students how I approach writing challenges by writing right in front of them. I share my strategies and how I overcome challenges. Then, I gradually invite students into the process until, eventually, they are finishing the writing!

I'll Show You the Door!

I use my door to promote a number of positive messages for students and colleagues. This year I've promoted the power of yet, popping in to observe my class (#observeme), and, currently, my love of reading.

Awesome Anchor Charts

I make sure my walls are decorated with useful academic language scaffolds, and I refer to them regularly to ensure my students begin to talk and write like historians.

Making Student Memories!

As 8th grade team leader, I was responsible for organizing our annual Washington D.C. trip. So, I decided to combine the trip with our Student Council election process and had candidates make their speeches in historical locales. Here, this young lady spoke on the spot Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his iconic "I have a dream" speech. So memorable!
Video - Active and Visible In Between Classes!

I like to generate enthusiasm, make students smile, and help move them along to their next class. It is also a great opportunity to reconnect with former students and with my colleagues. In fact, one of the most successful collaboration projects was born during a hallway moment.
